ABOUT US
What are we?
SPOTTY DOG FILMS is a an independent film production company set up in 1999
to make the short comedy film, Mary’s Date. It was made on a very low budget of £3000 and was
shot on film. It became a huge success, playing at mainstream cinemas alongside feature films
for over 26 weeks as well as the usual short film circuit. It was also included as part of a
programme on Film Four Channel about new directors during 2001.It has been sold to tv stations
all over the world. Following this success, Spotty Dog Films went on to make another comedy,
Joan and a documentary about the artist Dora Holzhandler. Spotty Dog Films are now making the
leap to feature films with a number of projects and with three in active development.
Who are we?
Jan Dunn – Creative Director
Jan dreamed about being a film director as a child, as early as the 1970’s. Her talent as an
actress was recognised at school and she originally trained as an actress in London before
finally beginning to make short films after attending the National Film and Television School
on a year long production management course in the late 90’s. She has since, produced and
directed seven short films.
She co-wrote a Treatment for a magical fairytale, Cake, with TV comedy writer, Georgia
Pritchett. This project has been optioned by Scottish producer, Leslie Hills at Skyline
Productions. The script is currently being developed with the help of Scottish Screen. In the
meantime, Jan is preparing for her feature film directorial debut with a dark, urban comedy,
From New York to LA, written by Sean Wilton. With Sean Jan is also co-writing a medieval action
adventure film set in 12th Century England. On the strength of this script, Jan and Sean were
selected by Screen South for their very first Trade Mission for New Talent to Los Angeles.
The project has been very well received and it is hoped this will be the third feature film for
Spotty Dog Films.
Kathleen McGoldrick – Head of Production
Kate, was originally a BBC radio news producer before briefly becoming an actress and working
for Sir Richard Eyre and Sir Peter Hall. Kate then proved herself as a theatre producer by
raising £120,000 for the theatre company she co-founded, Off The Cuff (a considerable amount
in theatre terms). With the finance she produced a national tour of Swollen Tongues, which
won great acclaim from critics and audiences alike. She also set up a writer’s development
programme and produced Tony Haygarth’s first play The Lie. Kate has also produced a number
of short films, Masks, Indeed and Shadey Stories. In 2004, she will be producing the dark,
urban comedy, From New York to LA starring Pauline McLynn from TV’s Father Ted and Jane McDonald
as herself. The film is a camp, kitsch, Karaoke comedy set in London and Brighton.
